A Pennsylvania teenager has been charged with desecrating a statue of Jesus after he took pictures of himself simulating a sex act with a kneeling statue of Jesus.
According to law enforcement officials, the incident occurred in July in front of Love In the Name of Christ, a Christian organization in his hometown of Everett.
The 14-year-old boy was not identified by authorities. He was charged Wednesday with desecration of a venerated object, a misdemeanor. Because of the boy's age, his case will be handled in juvenile court.
A spokesperson for the Christian organization said they did not press charges against the teenage boy.
"Our request was for prayer for the young man," the spokesperson said.
According to officials, someone in the district attorney's office found the photo and then contacted the police.
Pennsylvania law describes desecration as “Defacing, damaging, polluting or otherwise, physically mistreating in a way that the actor knows will outrage the sensibilities of persons likely to observe or discover the action.â€
Authorities say if the teenager is convicted, he could face up to two years in a juvenile jail.
