A 67-year-old man was stabbed to death and his wife was injured after the couple walked into their Staten Island home and found a burglar inside, law enforcement say.
Peter Gialluisi, a stroke victim used a walker to get around, was stabbed to death when trying to stop the suspect. His wife Vincenza, 66, was stabbed in the neck and back. Police arrested suspect Dante Viggiano, 20, of Staten Island in the deadly attack Monday.
Authorities say Vincenza tried to protect her disabled husband from the knife attack, before running out of the house and getting help from a neighbor. "She was bleeding from her head, all over her body, said David DiDia. "She was screaming, ‘My husband! My husband! They killed my husband," he added.
Both victims were transported to Staten Island University Hospital South where Peter later died. Police said Vincenza is in stable condition.
A neighbor told police the attacker ran into the woods nearby. Authorities later found Viggiano bleeding from his hands. Police said Viggiano apparently struggled with the victims over the knife. Vincenza later picked him out of a photo array, law enforcement said.
"Terrible, it's frightening, it's a terrible situation," neighbor Teresa Parenti said. "We live around the corner. It's scary."
Viggiano was sent to Bellevue Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
Authorities said Viggiano was charged with murder, attempted murder, burglary, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal mischief.
