Sergeant Meggan Lee Callahan was killed Wednesday, April 26, 2017.
Authorities say Callahan, 29, was responding to a fire that was set inside Bertie Correctional Institution when a male inmate attacked and killed her.
Officials stated the inmate who attacked her was serving a life sentence for a previous murder. He has been charged in the assault and killing of Sergeant Callahan, according to court documents.
Sergeant Callahan had been with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety for five years.
