How are you partnered up? I watched TV and it seems that everyone has a fellow police officer partner. Did the department assign you two together? Or did you have some say in it?

A partner or a buddy during a shift is normal during the duration of your shift. I think its normal to have a back up in case you respond to a situation. You feel much safer if you know someone is watching your back and vice versa. Also if you have an extra pair of eyes during patrol that would definitely help, as you guys can cover more area at once. And you wont be bored as hell if you have a partner to talk to.

I think that one has to be lucky to get a good partner or am I wrong and just any police officer serves for that purpose?

Some places simply have rotating shifts and partners that are paired up, not randomly, not they don't have the same partner every time. I think that's a good idea. It stops a certain level of familiarity and comfort, when you need to be aware at all times.

Rotating partners might be a good idea so that everyone knows everyone, don't know if it is effective in terms of creating routines though.
