Sheriff’s deputies in Georgia say two inmates used their grandmother’s casket to smuggle marijuana and other contraband into prison.
Inmates Nekoase Antwan Vinson, 30, and his cousin, Henry Ison Rouse, 27, were given permission to attend their grandmother’s funeral. Prison officers escorted both inmates in handcuffs and leg restraints to the Bentley Brothers funeral home Thursday night so they could bid farewell to their grandmother.
When they arrived to the funeral home, still in handcuffs the two inmates had been momentarily left alone for a couple of minutes to grieve for their loved one.
"This incident illustrates the audacity of this generation of jail inmates," Bibb County Sheriff David Davis said.
Authorities said the items were apparently placed in the coffin by relatives. "To use the body of a deceased grandmother to hide drugs and other contraband is wicked," Davis said.
According to Sheriff Davis, when the inmates returned to prison and searched, deputies found the contraband on them. Guards reportedly discovered marijuana, tobacco, a lighter and cellphone.
The two were charged with marijuana possession and trying to bring contraband into jail.
Authorities are investigation to determine who else was involved in the crime.
