I wanted to know how easy is it for an officer to get promoted? Is it true only after a couple of years as a patrol officer you can transfer into the SWAT Unit, K-9 unit or even become a narcotics officer.
How easy is it?

It will depend on the size of the agency you are working for. Also there will be some form of testing for promotions.
