Dating someone that just got out of prison

Can you still become a police officer if you are dating someone that just got out of prison? Could it be an issue with the gun. What if you kept it somewhere else, maybe you could leave it at work.
 
It's not allowed. As an officer you are required to have your weapon on you the majority of the time. Both on or off duty.
