So John Oliver did the best piece on Civil Forefeiture. If you don't know what it is, that is the practice where police officers confiscate property because it MIGHT be used or have been used in the commission of a crime. All over the US, offficers are recorded and reported to have confiscated cash, cars, and even houses with no trial or reason. One department that John Oliver features on the video actually bought a margarita machine with money they took off a traffic stop that had no actual violations. They just stated that the guy was carrying a large amount of cash because he was going to buy drugs and took it.

How is this even happening in the USA?

Have any of the LEOs on this board ever participated in such a thing? Was it justified in your eyes? why or why not?
 
This happens all the time in the UK. If British cops suspect that something was obtained with proceeds of crime, they are allowed to seize it. Seized goods are auctioned off every so often and the money is placed into the governments funds. A much more appropriate use than margarita machines!
 
This happened to my sister's boyfriend. You have no idea how many times this happens! My sister's boyfriend had cops take money out of his wallet right in front of his face! They are so crooked around here that it is hard to trust them.
 
It's a shame considering the danger many cops go through to protect and serve, but things like this make it very difficult to trust or even respect them. It's just plain wrong imo.
