Changing my career

I'm looking for some input from any police officers that changed their careers. I am 29 and I currently work for an insurance company. I always wanted to be a police officer so I am going to apply to the police station where I live. Did anybody else quit their job to become an officer. I am getting some flak from friends and family, did your family also give you a hard time.
