Florida police officers shot an armed man who threatened to kill himself, his roommates and any officers who came to his home near Fort Lauderdale.
Thomas Carberry, 50, was fatally shot Sunday afternoon in Wilton Manors by two police officers after he threatened to kill himself and the people around him, official said.
Authorities say Carberry's roommates, David Dlouhy and Terry Cooley, notified police after he allegedly threatened them.
The roommates told police when Carberry went outside they locked the door. "When he walked out of here, he wanted to be killed," Dlouhy said. "He hated how drugs had taken over his life."
The room mates told 911 dispatchers when Carberry learned he was locked out of the house he began to fire his gun. "I was telling the dispatcher, get the police here faster." He's coming through the door," explained Cooley.
When police arrived they found Carberry outside the house holding a gun in his right hand. Police ordered Carberry to drop the gun, he refused and officers were forced to shoot him.
"They hit him as he was approaching with the firearm in hand," said Wilton Manors Police Chief Paul O'Connell. "The officers had no choice."
A witness said he heard the police scream "Drop the weapon" at least three times. The man shouted back, "Just do it."
"There were neighbors who told our investigators he again and again said 'Shoot me, just shoot me,'" said Moschella a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff's Office.
Carberry was transported to Broward Health Medical Center where he died a short time later.
The two Wilton Manors police officers, whose names have not been released, will be placed on paid administrative leave per Wilton Manors Police policy.
