Interstate 287 in northern New Jersey has reopened after the State Police Arson and Bomb Squad investigated a suspicious item.
The incident began around 9 a.m. after a Department of Transportation worker spotted the item, according to Sgt. Jeff Flynn of the New Jersey State Police in Trenton.
About three miles of the highway was shut down between Hanover and Parsippany. The bomb squad sent robots to inspect the item, which appeared to be a suitcase.
"The contents of the bag have been deemed safe and the actions taken by the police were warranted," said Sgt. David Wright.
Authorities reopened the highway around 11 a.m.
"Because of where they package was, there in the median, it basically affected both sides of the road," said Capt. Stephen Jones, a state police spokesman.
"You've got to play things like this very carefully. You are providing a safe zone for the responders and the members of the public traveling any where around that area."

Well don in closing down the road, better to lose a few hours or even a day than to lose human lives.
