Police responded to a call after a good Samaritan reported to 911 that they saw an unresponsive baby inside a car.
Officer Joshua Funck was first to arrive at the scene. Not wasting anytime, he used an instrument to open the car door.
He immediately took the 5-week old baby out of the car. He reported the baby was unconscious and sweating heavily at the time.
The baby was rushed to a local hospital. According to a hospital spoke person the baby has made a full recovery and is doing just fine.
The temperatures outside on the day of the incident was around 90 degrees. According to officials inside the vehicle could have been over 130 degrees. At that temperature it is most likely deadly for anybody, let alone an infant.
"With all the media attention on this type of issue, it's mindboggling to me that someone can leave, better yet, forget, about a child inside of a vehicle," Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith said.
Gloria Elzy, 44, of Slidell, Louisiana told authorities she had just dropped off her other kid and forgot the infant was in the back seat. The age of Gloria’s older child has not been released.
The suspect is in custody on a charge of second-degree cruelty to juveniles. She also has a warrant for failure to appear for an unrelated case.
“If the citizen wouldn’t have immediately called Slidell Police, and Officer Funck didn’t act quickly, the baby would not have survived. They are both heroes in my book.†Smith said.
