A 10-year-old boy in Pennsylvania has been arrested and charged with criminal homicide on Monday in the slaying of an elderly woman.
The Wayne County boy was visiting his grandfather on Saturday when he lost his temper with a 90-year-old woman, state police said.
The incident began when the boy had entered Novak's room, and Novak screamed at him. The boy "got mad, lost his temper and grabbed a cane and put it around Novak's throat," according to an affidavit.
"I killed that lady," the 10-year-old boy told police Saturday during an interview. "I was only trying to hurt her," he added.
Investigators said the boy became angry. He lost his temper, grabbed a cane and allegedly hooked it around Novak's neck. He then punched her multiple times.
Afterwards he went to his grandfather and told him Novak was bleeding from her mouth.
The grandfather told authorities he did not see any blood when he first checked on Ms. Novak around 10:30 a.m., however the victim was "breathing heavy and looked scared." Around 11 a.m. he checked on her again, found her unresponsive and called 911. The boy’s grandfather was the caretaker for Novak, according to authorities.
An autopsy was performed on Novak on Monday, it showed blunt force trauma to her neck. Authorities say her death was ruled a homicide.
The suspect is currently being held at a Wayne County Correctional Facility. No bail has been set.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 22.
