A Salt Lake City officer who made a daring attempt to capture a suspect that jumped from the I-15 freeway overpass suffered serious injury.
The incident began Wednesday evening when the officer spotted the suspect in a stolen vehicle and tried to make a traffic stop.
The suspect pulled over, however he got out of the vehicle and ran onto a nearby embankment and jumped from the overpass.
"My understanding is it was somewhere between twenty and twenty-five feet," Detective Greg Wilking said.
"My understanding is the suspect jumping off the overpass was able to jump on and grab a hold of a tree and shimmy down that tree," said Wilking. "Our officer attempted the same maneuver and was unsuccessful."
The officer, who has not been identified, was transported to the hospital. He remained in serious condition on Thursday.
The suspect was later caught. Police have identified him as 20-year-old Jesser Cardina-Videa. He has been booked into jail for fleeing and resisting arrest, and also for two existing felony warrants.
