A New Jersey grocery store owner was arrested Friday for allegedly selling heroin out of his store in Pleasantville.
The owner, Kamran Khalid, 29, was charged with possession and distribution within a school zone and other related offenses, according to authorities.
Police raided the Stop and Save Market on Main street Friday afternoon and seized 400 bags of heroin and a large amount of cash. Police say they began their investigation about three weeks ago.
“It was an open-air narcotic market going on from inside the store,†said Capt. Rocky Melendez. “He wasn’t really concealing the fact that it was right over the counter.â€
Authorities shut down the market while the investigation continued and the city plans to revoke its license.
Khalid's lawyer, Steve Scheffler, said the grocery store is in his wife's name. "We’re a little disturbed as to why they would shut down the store," added Scheffler.
Scheffler also said the store is the main source of income for the family. "She obviously has no involvement."
