Tonawanda, N.Y.- Fire investigators and police found the man’s body inside his 163 Fries Road home. Police Lt. Nicholas Bado told reporters the remains of 60-year-old Joe Hollywood were found Monday afternoon after the fire burned out.
Police received a 911 call at 9:15 a.m. Monday from the distraught girlfriend who said Hollywood had threatened her with a gun and set the house on fire.
“He is going to kill me, and he has a gun,†the woman screamed, according to police. The 911 operator also heard the man yelling in the background but couldn’t make out was saying.
As police and firefighters arrived on the scene, they heard gunshots from the house.
Firefighters were told to stay back because they believed Hollywood was armed.
"From the initial call it sounded as if he was just determined to die today, one way or another, gave her that indication and gave her an opportunity to leave the home. It becomes really unpredictable when you have someone who is in this particular mental state, where they have just determined the die, so they have nothing to lose. The potential scenarios are numerous. The threat to officer safety, firefighter safety to resident safety percentage goes up dramatically high," said Bado.
Police were unsure whether Hollywood still was in the house, so they had the neighboring schools on locked down. They also had the neighborhood on lockdown.
An unnamed neighbor said she received a call in the morning and said "Area residents if you live within a quarter of a mile of 163 Fries, report to your basements until further notice."
Neighborhood resident Jason Conkling said, “They all had guns drawn, there were probably 20 cops at least, if not more.â€
Tonawanda Police lifted the lockdowns around 1 p.m.
His girlfriend did get out unharmed.
The cause of death for Joe Hollywood was unknown.
Hollywood legally changed his name from Joseph Bryniarski ten years ago.
