My father was an officer with the K9 unit. He adopted his K9, and spoke only German to it. This is good because criminals cannot command the dog, and my father had no one else to speak german with. He was afraid he would lose the language. When my father died, the dog could not understand anyone, and died a few months after my dad. Mom swears it was from a broken heart.
