In what areas do local cops use machine guns?

After the Hollywood shooting there was a big hype that the police did not have large caliber or automatic weapons, and were not a match for the bank robbers. There was talk they were going to upgrade their arsenal. Did it happen? Are there are other places, besides the Los Angeles area that have machine guns with their sidearm?

Machine guns..Wtf..Did i even read that correctly as machine guns..??
Cops don't need machine guns for any instance at all.Then why are they even allowed to carry it.?

I don't think that they should use machine guns, with a much larger spread of bullets they could injure bystanders and civilians. For more firepower they could use rifles or shotguns instead, I'm pretty sure that special units in the police force already use them.

Cops wouldn't ordinarily need machine guns. I mean that's just overkill (no pun intended). Plus a bank robbery is a rare circumstance for most cops.

Not that I aware of. I'm not the type to start at what my local police force carry with them as their sidearm, but they just carry pistols. I was in cadets, so I noticed that the reserves and the garrison practice with M5. Otherwise, no, I have not seen my local cops carry machine guns.
