A homeless man discovered a backpack with a huge amount of money and passports in a Dorchester mall on Saturday and turned it in to police officers, according to a statement from the Boston Police Department.
Police said the man found $2,400 in cash, $39,500 in travelers checks, passports, and various personal papers inside of the bag and flagged down police patrolling South Bay Center, the statement said.
Around 7:00 p.m. police were contacted by an employee of Best Buy who told police that a customer lost his backpack. The passport matched the customer's identity and his backpack was returned to him returned it to a man who reported losing it inside the mall’s Best Buy store.
The homeless man, who didn’t give out his name would only give the officers the address of the Boston shelter where he currently lives, police said.
"People will probably tell him he's nuts, but homeless people are the first to help you out,' said Bob Boisselle, who stays at the city's Long Island Shelter on Boston Harbor. “They don't have anything, but they'll give you what they do have.â€
