Ethics and Morality

Specifically to law enforcement professionals, do you view the society as inherently good natured with a few bad apples, or in your experience does anyone have the capacity for evil in their hearts? Has your opinion changed over time with experience, or have your own views held up over time?
I am asking because I have a child coming into the world soon, and I feel a better world perspective will be invaluable. thank you for any insight or ideas you can share.

I just have a question that doesn't approach the issue you are asking about before I get into it: Did anyone else mentally sing, 'ethics & morals & carnal forbearance'??? I tend to think that was just me...

Anywho, it's unfair to ask that question because it really depends on each officers specific experience & not necessarily the way they have always felt. Coming in as a newbie on the force you have a glint in your eye & a weight in your boot that gets lost/reinforced depending on who you are as a person that's dealing with the same experience. What I mean by that is if you have a positive outlook you may take a robbery as a glass half full situation. Unlike people with half empty glasses.

Every garden has its bad apples in the dirt. You just have to pick out the apples that are good vs the ones that are bad.

Well, I think I am a fairly good person but I am capable of having bad/violent thoughts. We all are capable of doing bad things, no one is exempted.

There might be both good and bad apples but that's certainly not the best approach to law enforcement. That's why profiling goes wrong many times. Those you might presume are more likely to commit a crime are stopped, beaten up and later it's discovered that it was a case of mistaken identity.

IMHO there's no such thing as model citizens who'll never commit a crime.

Anyone can commit a crime and police should at all times treat all they serve and protect equally. If you are to presume guilt then apply that across the spectrum.

I like to see things as people aren't bad but that can do bad things. Sometimes we see people coerced, brainwashed or left with no choice but to compromise their morals and act in a way that they are ashamed of. In society the levels of morals and ethics does change and also in the US it varies from state to state, even though there is the overall moral code. I have seen in small towns, there is often a 'different' way of seeing and doing things.

I know other people share the same concerns, that it's a bad world to bring a life into, but things can change and it doesn't mean we have to fall. Is humanity doomed?

There are quite a few bad apples that are present in society. But that does not mean the society as a whole is bad. Every coin has its own good or bad sides.

Though am not a cop, I think the society that we live in has both good and bad characters. We were all brought up differently and so our perspective about life defers from person to person. That's why we have individuals who abhor violence while there are others who have no problem being violent.

I am not sure if I find violence itself inherently evil. physical activity and sports can be both violent and productive. as a martial artist, we were taught that might is right, and to only use violence for defense. I feel my definition of evil is more such as the desire and willingness to do harm to others for personal gain. do police feel that anyone could be capable of that, or have they witnessed such behavior in society?

I view the society as inherently good with few bad apples. However, my opinion changed through experience and observation.

I always see things in a positive way. In that manner, you attract the all positive vibes in the world. Through time, development and technology, some used positive developments in the other way. They use it as a means to achieve their ends. It is actually how we view and use the things that we have now.

A combination of genetic lottery and environmental conditions leads to evil. Everybody can be evil, but not clearly not everybody is.

Everyone has the capacity for good as much as bad and i think that the environment and certain factors come into play. I think that you should look at making sure that your child has everything necessary to make them better and be a moral example to so many.

You can find bad apples in every single group in society. Be it cops, teenagers, Muslims or stamp collectors, the majority of peole are good and a select few are bad. It's the same everywhere. Just remember not to let one bad apple spoil the lot!

Lately Law Enforcement seem to be getting away with murder. I haven't had any interactions with the Police but I have friends that's been pulled over for no reason. Not all Law Enforcement personnel are bad but there are some that take the law into their own hands. It just seems like the punishment for their crimes is a suspention, then being reinstated to carry on as usual.

All people were created in God's image; therefore every man has the capacity to do good and this is what God expects of them. However, man has the sinful nature - he is inclined to do bad things. It is in man's God-given freewill to choose to do good or evil. Yet, one must remember that these are completely opposite paths; their ends will not be the same. Doing good things will lead to good consequences; likewise, doing evil things leads to an evil end. So having learned this, would you still want to do evil?

This is my thoughts based on a Biblical standpoint.
