Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Phillip Barker, 24, has been charged with hitting and killing a person with his patrol car.
According to authorities the incident happened around 3 a.m., Saturday morning. They said on-duty Officer Barker was allegedly driving around 100 mph in a 30 mph zone. Meanwhile, James Short was walking across the road against a red light when he was hit by Officer Barker.
Officer Barker has stated that his lights and sirens were on at the time of the accident.
"It’s not an easy decision to make. But looking through the laws the compelling factor was the speed," said CMPD Chief Kerr Putney.
Officer Phillip Barker has since been put on administrative leave without pay. He has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, and is set to appear in court early August.
