Accused cop killer's arrest warrant released by police.

If cops go to someones house searching for a particular person of interest, they ring the doorbell and they see him inside the home and he doesn't open the door, are the police allowed to legally knock the door down to gain entry, to get the suspect if they do not have an arrest warrant?
